The intensity of exercise is measured as a percentage of your maximum heart rate. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) advises that the intensity remain between 60%-90% of the individual's maximum heart rate. When determining a person's level of intensity, it is important to consider the following:
- the person's fitness level
- medications that may affect heart rate
- risk of cardiovascular injury
- risk of orthopedic injury
- personal preference
- program objectives
