The intensity of exercise is measured as a percentage of your maximum heart rate. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) advises that the intensity remain between 60%-90% of the individual's maximum heart rate. When determining a person's level of intensity, it is important to consider the following:
  • the person's fitness level
  • medications that may affect heart rate
  • risk of cardiovascular injury
  • risk of orthopedic injury
  • personal preference
  • program objectives
